A Viking range that clicks continuously — whether you’re trying to light it or it’s clicking on its own — is one of the most annoying appliance issues. It’s also almost always fixable. Here’s the complete guide.
Quick Answer
Clicking but won’t light: Moisture in the igniter, misaligned burner cap, or failed igniter.
Clicking on its own (all burners randomly clicking): Moisture in the spark module — usually from a boilover. Needs to dry out.
Clicking after lighting (won’t stop): Liquid got inside the burner cap port. Clean and dry it.
Cause 1: Moisture After a Boilover
This is by far the most common cause of a Viking range clicking continuously. When something boils over, liquid flows under the burner cap and into the spark module area. The spark module — which generates the clicking — sees this as a ground fault and keeps firing.
What to do:
- Turn off the range completely
- Remove all burner caps and grates
- Blot up any visible moisture with a paper towel
- Clean all igniter tips and burner ports with a dry toothbrush
- Leave everything disassembled and let the cooktop air dry for several hours — or use a hair dryer on low
- Reassemble and test
90% of cases: This resolves the continuous clicking.
Cause 2: Misaligned Burner Cap
After cleaning or a boilover, burner caps often get put back slightly off-center. A misaligned cap can cause the ignition system to see a constantly-open circuit and keep clicking.
Fix: Remove the cap, clean the seat underneath, and reinstall it perfectly flat and centered. Feel it click into position.
Cause 3: Cracked or Damaged Igniter
If clicking persists after drying and cleaning, inspect the igniter electrode (the ceramic prong near the burner). If it’s:
- Cracked
- Black and burnt
- Broken at the tip
…it needs replacement. A damaged igniter creates an unresolvable ground fault that causes continuous clicking.
Cause 4: Failed Spark Module
If all burners click simultaneously and constantly — even when you haven’t touched the knobs — the spark module itself may be failing or shorting. This requires professional diagnosis and replacement.
What NOT to Do
- Don’t use water to clean igniters — water in the spark module is the cause, not the solution
- Don’t ignore continuous clicking — it’s drawing electrical current and can damage the spark module over time
- Don’t try to disassemble the spark module — it’s inside the burner assembly and needs professional handling
