Viking Range Igniter Won't Light? Here's What to Check First

March 14, 2024

Viking professional range burner

The igniter clicks, clicks, clicks — but your Viking range burner won’t light. This is one of the most common Viking range service calls we receive in Los Angeles and Seattle. Here’s what’s actually happening and how to troubleshoot it.

Why Viking Range Igniters Fail

Viking professional ranges use a spark ignition system. When you turn a burner knob to the ignite position, a spark module sends current to ceramic igniters positioned at each burner. The spark should ignite the gas flowing from the burner.

When it doesn’t work, there are four common causes:

1. Moisture or Food Debris on the Igniter

The most common cause of a clicking-but-not-lighting Viking burner. Boilover liquid, grease, or food debris on the igniter tip prevents a strong spark from jumping to the burner.

Fix: Remove the burner cap and grate. Clean around the igniter tip with a dry toothbrush. Do not use water — let everything air dry completely (or use a hair dryer on low to speed this up). Reinstall and test.

2. Misaligned Burner Cap

The burner cap must sit perfectly level and centered over the burner base. A tilted cap prevents proper gas flow and ignition.

Fix: Remove the cap, clean the seating area, and reinstall carefully. Ensure it’s fully seated and level.

3. Failed Spark Module

The spark module is the electronic component that sends current to all the igniters. If it fails, one or all burners may stop sparking.

Symptoms: No spark at all (no clicking sound), or clicking from all burners simultaneously when you turn on any one burner.

Fix: This requires professional repair. The spark module is typically accessible under the cooktop and costs $160–$220 to replace including labor.

4. Failed Igniter Electrode

The ceramic igniter itself can crack or wear out. A cracked igniter won’t produce a consistent spark.

Symptoms: Weak or intermittent spark that sometimes lights the burner and sometimes doesn’t.

Fix: Igniter replacement, typically $150–$200 including labor from a Viking appliance repair specialist.

What If the Burner Lights but Immediately Goes Out?

If your Viking range burner lights and immediately extinguishes when you release the knob, the thermocouple or flame sensor is likely faulty. This safety device detects whether the burner is lit. If it doesn’t sense a flame, it signals the gas valve to close. A failed thermocouple cuts gas immediately after ignition.

This is a different repair from igniter failure and requires professional diagnosis.

When to Call a Viking Appliance Repair Technician

You should call us if:

  • Cleaning and drying the igniter doesn’t resolve the clicking
  • You smell gas when attempting to light the burner
  • Multiple burners stopped working at the same time
  • The burner lights but won’t stay lit
  • You see visible damage to the igniter ceramic

Do not attempt to force-light a Viking range burner if you smell gas. Turn off the range, ventilate the kitchen, and call us.
